Small business website design in Devon and Cornwall

Posted on 16th May 2023

A good website design for a small business is now a key matter for the present and future of  businesses based in Devon and Cornwall and anywhere else in the UK.

Your audience will expect a website that looks good, is easy to use and gives them what they need quickly.

Let’s have a look at some of the key aspects of website design that you need to consider.

An SME must deliver a good user experience

When a visitor lands on your website they need to get information that they need quickly and easily. They need to be able to easily navigate to where they can interact with your business. This first experience will also determine whether the visitor ever returns to your website. Lose them once and they are unlikely to return for a second visit.

What it takes to achieve a good user experience

There are many aspects to achieving this ‘Good’ user experience so let’s have a look at some of them.

  • Website design- The design should be clean and not be too cluttered. According to Hick’s law “The time it takes to make a decision increase with the number and complexities of choices” (Source Laws of UX). Make it easy for your visitors to decide.
  • Mobile friendly- Almost 60% of website using is now on mobiles so you need to deliver an experience that looks great on all devises especially mobiles of all sizes.
  • Good Website navigation/Clear hierarchy- The navigation around your site needs to be clear and easy to follow. If your visitor and potential customer becomes frustrated because they can’t easily navigate your site, they will not engage. The site layout and menu/ sub menu’s structure are something to focus on from a user point of view.
  • High Quality images – Visitors experience high quality images every day of their life from watching TV to images on mobile phones or games consoles. They will expect high quality images on your website.
  • Choice of colours- Stick to the colours associated with your brand which will help to establish your brand identity in the minds of your visitors.
  • Clear call to action- Have a clear call to action that is easy to use. This call to action will vary by the type of product or service you are marketing/ selling. It could be a buy now button or a request for more information along with many other alternatives.

Good websites need targeted content

Once you have the design ideas clear you need to consider the type of content you want to add to your site. The content should be written with your visitors in mind.

What is the profile of your existing customer and potential customer. Do you have demographic information about your target audience.

For example, if your audience is for teenagers, then the content must be written in language and images that will appeal to them.

At this stage you should also be considering how your site will perform from a SEO standpoint. What keywords and phrases are your target audience using. What content are your competitors publishing and what can you learn from them. This information is available, but you may choose to get help from your website partner who will be more familiar with this part of your plan.
