Ideas for a good website design

Posted on 21st February 2023

There are many ideas for a good website design which you can try to build into your design so let’s look at some of those ideas in an easy-to-follow manner

Who are your websites target audience?

Knowing who your target audience is not always straight forward and need to be considered carefully. One size fits all will does not work anymore, you need to define your target audience so that you design a site that will appeal to them. Examples of the sort of information you should consider about your audience include:

  • Age group
  • Location of where they live and work
  • Income
  • Gender
  • Recent trends
Start with the data you already have and then search out external data where possible.

At this stage it is also a good idea to examine how you competitors are targeting their audience. Why ‘re-invent the wheel’.

Keep the website design clean and easy to follow

The design of your website needs to be designed so it resonates with your target audience but once you get their attention, you need to make sure you get a reaction from as many as possible.

The design needs to be clear with easy navigation. You only have a few seconds, so make it obvious where the visitor should click.

The content on the website pages needs to be succinct and use phrases and words which your audience will easily understand. If it is necessary to give detailed supporting information, consider offering downloads (e.g. a brochure) or attaching explainer videos. The visitor can then choose if they want to go further.

Good quality content will encourage website engagement

When you attract visitors to your site, you want them to engage and read the content. This will only happen if the visitor values what you have written. This means writing the content which will appeal to them.

Put yourself in the position of your site visitor and ask yourself what they would value reading about. You could refer to previous communication with your customers or potential customers if you need inspiration. Consider your content from an ‘Outside in’ point of view.

Also consider getting input for your team or people outside your business so you get some fresh ideas on potential content.

Keep user requirements to a minimum

Let site visitors explore your site without requesting information from them such as email or other contact details until it is needed. When a visitor has reviewed your site and then wants to make an enquiry or make a purchase, they will be happier to provide the necessary information. The process for gathering the data need to be easy and quick so that the visitor does not loose patience. Patience is a rare commodity and need to be used carefully.

There are many other aspects to good website design. We have only scratched the surface of issues that should be considered.
