There are many aspects of the do’s and don’ts of website design. We will look at a few on the main ideas here.
When someone visit your website, they will have something specific in minds. Perhaps they are trying to solve a problem. Your website needs to be focused on answering that problem in an easy-to-follow manner
Looking at your customer base from the ‘outside in’ is the way to view what a customer might be looking for when visiting your site. You may have experience already to bring to the plan or you may do some research on your customer base to help with the website decision making.
Being mobile friendly has become a crucial element of every website. The use of mobile technology for searching is growing throughout the world and the UK is no exception.
According to Statista “In the fourth quarter of 2022, mobile devices (excluding tablets) generated 59.16percent of global website traffic, consistently hovering around the 50 percent mark since the beginning of 2017 before permanently surpassing it in 2020. ( Source: Stastista)
It is therefore imperative that your website is designed with mobile use in mind. This needs to be planned at an early stage. Below are a few areas you should consider.
Firstly, your website needs to be set up so that it will be found by Google and other search engines. Google is the pre-dominant search engine with a desktop market for search of almost 85% ( Source: Stastista) and over 96% of Mobile searches ( Source: Stastista).
This means that you must plan for your website design and content in a way that will enable it to be found. The major considerations will revolve around:
Keywords and Key Phrases- You will need to research what are the main keywords or phrases that your audience are using to find you. You need to spend time on this and be specific.
Add your keywords phrases to your website set up This means that the page titles, the tags, page headers and descriptions all contain the keywords that have been selected. After the site has been created and launched, it is a good idea to add more content and include new keywords and phrases as you progress.
Backlinks- This is when another website links directly to your website. It helps to lend credibility to your site in the eyes of the Google bot. This is difficult to achieve when you are a new business but can be achieved over time.
Add content that is focused on your customers. We have already written an article about adding content to help and inform your audience. If you would like to read it, please click on the link below:
Write website content to help and inform people
When you do add content, make sure you don’t crowd the page. Ideally your page content should have at least 500 words or more. It does not need to be excessively long. If you do have a very long article which visitors may want to read, you could allow access to that content by offering a download.
Once you have attracted a visitor you should have a call to action. It could be a click to buy or a form for visitors to make an enquiry. Make the call to action a strong and bright coloured button to draw attention to it.
If your call to action requires the visitor to buy online, then you need to build in the use of Ecommerce software into your website design. Talk to your web design partner about the options available to you.
